JOHNS ISLAND, S.C. – Juliet Vongphoumy shot a six-over 78 in her opening round and was even through 12 holes before play was suspended at the Briar's Creek Invitational. Maryland sits in seventh place after a first-round 312 and shooting14-over in the second. Second-round play ended at 7:15 p.m. Monday evening, and will resume Tuesday morning at 8:15 a.m.
Senior Christine Shimel is tied for 17th and is currently seven-over through 12 holes in the second round of play. She had a strong start to the tournament with an opening round of 74. Freshman Heidi Baek is not far off from the pack, tied for 23rd after shooting a 78 in the first round.
Maryland is only five strokes behind tournament leaders Coastal Carolina, who are 33-over as a team through one and half rounds of play. Players battled course conditions with winds from 25-30 miles per hour and gusts of up to 40 miles per hour.
