Mark Murray is in his sixth season as the full-time assistant coach at Maryland. This year he also will take on the role of administrator for the inaugural Varsity women's water polo team. Murray came to Maryland from Salem-Teikyo University (W.Va.), where he was the head coach from 1994-1997.
As one of the best recruiters in the country Murray was selected to be Salem-Teikyo's first head coach in 1994. During his first year at the helm, both the men's and women's teams went 1-9. By the time Murray was ready to depart for Maryland three years later, both teams were compiling 10-1 records. At the 1998 NCAA Division II Championships, Salem-Teikyo's men's team finished fourth, while the women's team finished 14th. Murray coached student-athletes at Salem-Teikyo to six national titles at the 1998 NCAA Division II Championships, and watched one of his swimmers be honored as the men's NCAA Division II Swimmer of the Year.
While at Salem-Teikyo, Murray's success did not go without notice. In 1996 and 1998, he was named the WVIAC (West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference) Coach of the Year.
Murray earned his bachelor's degree in political science from Virginia Commonwealth University in 1988. He was a four-year varsity letterwinner and a two-year team captain on the Rams' swimming and diving team. In 1991, Murray earned his master's degree, also from Virginia Commonwealth, in sports management.
