The goal of the Fear the Turtle campaign is to raise $1.2M to annually fund scholarships for the eight men's teams at the University of Maryland that do not have the maximum number of scholarships allowed by the NCAA. These men's sports – Baseball, Cross Country, Golf, Swimming, Tennis, Indoor Track and Field, Outdoor Track and Field, and Wrestling – need additional scholarships in order to recruit talented student-athletes to compete for the Terrapins.
With additional scholarships, these teams will have the best possible opportunity to compete successfully within the ACC and nationally. Success from these eight teams will propel Maryland Athletics to a status where we will be a contender for annual recognition as a top 10 program in the Director's Cup, the program sponsored by the National Association of Collegiate Athletic Directors, which measures the best overall collegiate athletics programs in the nation. These additional scholarships will truly give our opponents reason to Fear the Turtle.
The Terps have proven that with appropriate funding, we excel. The additional scholarships for the eight men's teams have been made possible through the addition of 20 scholarships for women's water polo and competitive cheerleading over the next three years. This campaign will allow the Terps to show their commitment to both gender equity and competitive excellence throughout our program.
While the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics has the desire to fully fund all its teams, it does not have adequate funding to do so at this time. With a tax-deductible gift of $66, 000 payable over a four-year period,you can provide a scholarship for your sport for a gifted student-athlete. You will be providing an opportunity for deserving young students to receive a quality education from the University of Maryland, and you will be helping your team become more competitive on the conference and national levels.
Once a signed pledge commitment for $66, 000 and the Year 1 payment are received, your coach can then use the funding to recruit with that scholarship aid. Gifts of less than the full, four-year scholarship aid of $66, 000 are also welcomed. Partial scholarship gifts for a sport will be pooled, and once pooled gifts total at least half the amount needed to fund at least half of a full scholarship, the partial aid will be available for that sport.
Please note that donors who are Terrapin Club members will receive Terpoint credit for their donation (8 points per $100), but this scholarship campaign will need to represent gifts above and beyond the annual Terrapin Club donation. Fear the Turtle scholarship donations will not replace one's annual Terrapin Club donation and cannot provide Terrapin Club ticket and parking benefits.
