DARNESTOWN, Md. - When Johnny Holliday met the kids of the Youth Leadership Foundation, he saw himself.
"I didn't have that much as a kid," Holliday said. "I know how much it means for these kids to get a scholarship."
Holliday was once again on hand for the eighth annual Johnny Holliday Scholarship Classic at Bretton Woods Golf Course Monday.
The one day charity event benefited the Johnny Holliday Scholarship Fund and the Youth Leadership Foundation. Each foursome at the Classic included a local celebrity from a group that included Gary Williams, Kevin Anderson and Walt Williams.
For Holliday, the chance to help someone achieve their dream of attending college keeps him vigorously committed to helping the event continue to grow.
"The feeling is indescribable. It's why everything we do at this tournament is so worthwhile, knowing that you're helping a young person and taking some of the financial burden away for them and their families. It's a great feeling."
Founded in 1997, the Youth Leadership Foundation helps at-risk youth in the Washington area by boosting academic performance and developing character. The organization has seen 97 percent of its students graduate from high school and go on to college.
The group offers services that teach children everything from Math to Drama. Whatever the subject may be, Holliday believes that with a lot of hard work and a little help, all of them can be successful.
"I've visited with these kids, and all they need is just a chance to succeed," Holliday said. "Somebody telling them they can do something."
