COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Senior linebacker Cole Farrand has been selected as the Solomon Eye Terp of the Week for his outstanding defensive effort against Indiana in the team's first Big Ten Conference win.
The senior backer totaled a season-high 19 tackles in the Terps' 37-15 victory over Indiana Saturday. Farrand's 19 stops is the most in a single game by a Big Ten player this season and is tied for the second-highest total in a FBS game this season.
The Green Pond, N.J., native finished four tackles shy of his career high. Farrand had 23 tackles against Clemson on Oct. 26 of last season. In addition to his 19 tackles, Farrand also totaled 1.5 tackles for loss and one pass breakup against the Hoosiers.
Head Coach Randy Edsall was thrilled with Farrand's play and was very complimentary of his effort in the team's historic victory.
"He's the heart and soul of our defense. And when he's not out there, it hurts us,” Edsall said.
Although Farrand did not see as much playing time against Syracuse on Sept. 20, he kept himself busy against the Hoosiers and came up huge for the Terrapin defense.
“This was our coming out game," the linebacker said. "This was the one everyone was looking at to see if we were worth anything in the Big Ten."
The Terps are set to open Big Ten play at home as they welcome the 20th-ranked Ohio State Buckeyes to Capital One Field at Byrd Stadium Saturday. Kickoff is scheduled for noon.
