Under the direct supervision of the Assistant Vice President for University Development, and in consultation with the Director of Athletics and the Senior Managing Director of Alumni Relations and Athletic Development, the Senior Director of Development and Alumni/Senior Associate Athletic Director for Development/Executive Director of the Terrapin Club Scholarship Fund (“Director”) will serve as the chief strategist and unit manager for Department of Intercollegiate Athletics (ICA) Development and Alumni Relations program. This position has the primary responsibility for raising private philanthropic funds through a wide range of fundraising initiatives and will oversee all aspects of the planning, implementation, and execution of ICA's comprehensive fundraising and alumni relations program. The position is charged with directing all development operations for Maryland Athletics, including the Terrapin Club, major gifts, premium seating, the M Club, planned giving and capital projects as well as raising annual fund dollars to support the university's sports programs. The successful candidate will be responsible for building, nurturing, and motivating a fifteen member internal professional and administrative development team comprised of major gifts officers, leadership annual giving fundraisers, special events, donor stewardship and services, and coordinators responsible for working with multiple sports programs.
The Director is responsible for the identification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of a portfolio of prospects, and is expected to travel 20-30% of the time. He/she provides strategic input and staff support for solicitations in coordination with the AD, the Senior MD, the VP of University Relations, university leadership and leadership volunteers, as necessary and attends meetings with his/her direct reports to assist in working with donors, boards, colleagues, and/or volunteers. In particular, this individual will ensure that the activities of the Senior Managing Director for Alumni Relations and Athletics Development are strategically maximized to achieve the greatest possible fundraising results for ICA and the University of Maryland.
The Director will embrace the adoption of best practices, policies and protocols that will promote a donor-centric, collaborative approach to fundraising in support of UR's goals, purpose and ambition.
The Director attends, and may facilitate in areas of expertise, specialized training and development sessions with deans, vice presidents, assistant vice presidents, directors and seasoned and new professionals.
Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor's Degree is required. Master's Degree is preferred. A minimum of 7 - 10 years of demonstrated fundraising experience with proven success in the cultivation, solicitation, and stewarding of six and seven-figure plus gifts is required, preferably at a NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) level athletics program. Experience managing the fundraising activities of senior institutional leadership. Experience in Athletic fundraising in a university environment with an understanding of university culture is highly desired. Demonstrated experience as a strong and effective manager and supervisor of staff with a minimum of seven years of supervisory experience. Demonstrated success in managing and motivating fundraisers. Success in the design and management of Capital Campaigns. Knowledge of NCAA rules and regulations governing donor/student-athlete relationships and related functions.
Must have strong interpersonal, management and organizational skills and excellent oral and written communication skills. Must have the ability to work collaboratively among various levels of staff within the university. Ability to earn the confidence of a wide range of internal and external constituents. Effective leadership capabilities; able to mentor and coach team in area of responsibility and the achievement of organization goals. Ability to think strategically and achieve organization's goals relating to position and to operationalize strategic goals into action plans. Ability to provide oversight of compliance and regulatory requirements pertaining to position and maintain confidentiality. Ability to manage intense stress with multiple competing priorities while maintaining a positive attitude and affect. Ability to find humor in day-to-day challenges while being focused on solutions. Ability to manage details and complexity, to handle a variety of tasks simultaneously and to work under pressure.
