#2 Maryland Travels to #19 Indiana Friday

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The second-ranked Maryland field hockey team (13-2, 5-1 B1G) will make its first-ever trip to No. 19 Indiana (9-5, 1-5) Friday with a 3 p.m. match in Bloomington.

• Maryland has won eight straight games over the last four weeks. Most recently, the Terrapins beat Rutgers, 4-0, Sunday in College Park. Sarah Sprink added two goals for the Terps, while Maxine Fluharty and Moira Putsch also scored. RECAP | STATS

• Twelve Terps have combined to score 59 goals this year. Maxine Fluharty leads the way with 12, while Sarah Sprink and Moira Putsch each have nine. Katie Gerzabek leads with 15 assists. Anna Dessoye leads the team in points with 28 off of seven goals and 14 assists.

Sarah Sprink was named Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week Tuesday for the second time this season and the eighth weekly honor for the Terps this year.

• The Terrapins lead the country and the Big Ten in scoring margin (+2.80) and goals scored per game (3.93).

Scouting the HOOSIERS

• Indiana is ranked No. 19 in the latest Penn Monto/NFHCA Division I Coaches Poll. The Hoosiers are 9-5 overall and 1-5 in Big Ten Play. Most recently, they fell to No. 5 Penn State, 2-1 on Friday.

• Audra Heilman leads the Hoosiers with 13 goals and five assists for 31 points so far this season.

• This is the first varsity matchup between the two teams. Maryland won the only matchup with Indiana back in 1981. The Terps beat the Hoosiers' club team 3-2 on Oct. 23, 1981 in College Park.

• Maryland is ranked No. 2 in the latest Penn Monto/NFHCA Division I Coaches poll, released Oct 21.

• The Terps have been ranked in the top five for the last 19 straight weeks, dating back to the preseason poll in 2013.

• The Terrapins have appeared in the top five nationally in 161 of 166 polls since the 1999 season.

• Prior to the poll released Oct. 9, 2012, the Terrapins had not been outside the top five since before the 1999 season. They were ranked sixth in the Oct. 9 poll.

2014 Team Captains

• Three players have been named team captains for the 2014 season. Maxine Fluharty, Katie Gerzabek and Sarah Sprink will serve as the team's captains.

"Maxine, Katie and Sarah are a talented dynamic, hardworking leadership trio," head coach Missy Meharg said. "The front field, the midfield, the backfield are represented by these NCAA/FIH experienced players. All have been honored by their leagues and all three represented their countries in the Junior World Cup. They understand that the way we train and prepare puts us in position to win championships in November."

• The Terrapins joined the Big Ten conference this year, after playing in the ACC for 31 years. Big Ten field hockey is now the biggest conference in the history of the sport in the NCAA with nine teams - Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Michigan State, Northwestern, Ohio State, Penn State, Rutgers and Maryland.

• The Terps are 87-32-3 (.725) all-time against Big Ten opponents.

• Head coach Missy Meharg is 71-12-1 (.852) vs. Big Ten opponents in her 27 years at the helm of the Maryland field hockey program.

HOME SWEET HOME

Since its opening in 2003, the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex has provided the Maryland hockey program a huge home field advantage.

• The Terps are 135-15 (.900) all-time at the Complex.

• Maryland won 38 straight games at the Complex from Oct.11, 2008 through Oct. 14, 2011. The streak ended with a 5-2 loss to then-No. 1 Old Dominion.

• The Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex has played home to 22 of Maryland's NCAA Tournament games, including two Final Fours (2007, 2010). The Terrapins are 21-1 in those games and won the 2010 national title on their home field.

PACK THE HOUSE

• The Maryland field hockey team has increasingly attracted more and more fans to the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex season after season. The Terrapins have led the nation in attendance since 2010.

• In 2013, Maryland led the country in attendance with 8,176 fans coming out to see the Terrapins. On average, 629 fans came to each game, which was nearly 200 more than North Carolina's average of 438 which was second in the country.

• An NCAA-record crowd of 2,381 came out to watch as Maryland beat North Carolina 3-2 in double overtime for the 2010 national championship at the Complex.

During Missy Meharg's tenure, the Terrapins have become one of the nation's most dangerous teams in overtime.

• The Terps are 56-22 (.718) all-time in games that went to overtime or penalty strokes.

Three Terps Selected To Big Ten Players To Watch List

• Junior Anna Dessoye and seniors Maxine Fluharty and Katie Gerzabek were named to the Big Ten Players to Watch List before the season started. The full list is at http://www.bigten.org/sports/w-fieldh/spec-rel/082114aab.html.

• Dessoye is Maryland's leading returning scorer, after she notched 13 goals and 16 assists in 2013. Fluharty added 12 goals and seven assists last year, while Gerzabek scored five goals and notched three assists in her 19 games played.
