COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The second-ranked Maryland field hockey team won its 10th straight game Wednesday with an 8-1 rout of crosstown opponent American in the Terps' annual pink game for breast cancer awareness.

Sarah Sprink, Alyssa Parker and Moira Putsch each scored twice in the game as the Terrapins (15-2, 6-1 B1G) scored at least eight goals for the fourth time in the last five games. The Terps outshot the Eagles (8-8), 28-3, to control both ends of the field.

“Any coach would be ecstatic to play that brand of hockey,” head coach Missy Meharg said. “It's exciting with lots of goals scored. We had a great counterattack out of our defense. Our intercepting was with such power and our balance was tremendous this evening.”

Sprink put the Terrapins on the board in the fifth minute when she scored off a penalty corner. Katie Gerzabek, who leads the Big Ten in assists, picked up the assist on the play.

Less than four minutes later, senior Maxine Fluharty found Parker near the far post to tap in the second Terps' goal. In the 13th minute, redshirt sophomore Emma Rissinger intercepted the ball and passed it to junior Anna Dessoye for a backhanded shot from the top of the circle for a 3-0 lead.

In the 24th minute, Putsch scored her first goal of the evening off a rebounded shot by Welma Luus. With just over three minutes left in the first half, Gerzabek found Putsch up ahead with numbers for the score. The Terps would lead 5-0 at the break.

The Terrapins picked up where they left off in the second half, as Sprink added her second goal of the game off a penalty corner set up by Delaney Leathers and Dessoye 2:25 into the half.

Five minutes later, Parker added her second score of the evening for a 7-0 lead when she chipped one in over the goalie off a pass from Putsch. In the 52nd minute, Rissinger scored a diving goal off a pass from Parker for the Terps' eighth goal.

American got on the board when Grace Wilson scored off a penalty corner with 14:46 to play.

Four Terrapins have scored 10 or more goals this year – Fluharty (13), Sprink (12), Putsch (11) and Dessoye (10).

Carrie Hanks was named Big Ten Freshman of the Week Tuesday for the first time in her career.
