Box Score COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Senior captain Katie Gerzabek of the second-ranked Maryland field hockey team led the Terrapins to a 6-0 rout of Ohio State Friday in the Terps' first home Big Ten conference game. Gerzabek scored her first two goals of the year and added two assists to lead Maryland (8-2, 3-1 B1G).
Maryland controlled the game from the start with four goals in the first period alone, all in the final 10 minutes of the half. Junior Anna Dessoye, freshman Moira Putsch and Junior Emma Rissinger also scored. Freshman Lein Holsboer notched her first career goal.
Dessoye got the Terrapins on the board in the 26th minute when she knocked in a shot off a rebound on a penalty corner. Less than three minutes later, Gerzabek dove head first towards the cage to score off a pass from Putsch.
Putsch scored herself just a few minutes later off a pass from Gerzabek, who sent it from the left side. Putsch finished it off with a high shot at the near post. Holsboer added her goal with 1:25 to go in the half with another score off a rebound on a penalty corner.
Gerzabek made it a 5-0 lead for the Terrapins just 1:37 into the second half when she brought the ball all the way and worked past multiple Ohio State defenders for the backhanded score.
Rissinger's goal finalized the score at 6-0 in the 52nd minute when she finished off a pass from Gerzabek from out on the right side.
The Terrapins outshot the Buckeyes (3-7, 0-3) 23 to seven. Redshirt senior goalkeeper Brooke Cabrera had four saves in her 61 minutes in goal and junior goalkeeper Jill Genovese had two as well to preserve the Terps' fourth shutout this year.
Moira Putsch was named Big Ten Freshman of the Week for the second time this season Tuesday.
Next, the Terrapins will welcome No. 18 Old Dominion (5-4) to College Park for a 2 p.m. matchup on Sunday. Admission and parking are both free.
