University Park, Pa. - The Maryland women's golf team finished in fourth place with a 72-hole score of 909 at the Nittany Lion Invitational.
Juliet Vongphoumy led the Terps with a three-round score of 222 (77-72-73). Vongphoumy shot an even 72 in the second round and +1 (73) in the third round to finish in seventh place overall.
“We had two really rough first rounds but I think today was a break through round for some of our players,” head coach Diana Cantu said.
Heidi Baek followed Vongphoumy with a three-round score of 230 (73-77-80), which tied her for 28th overall.
Alexandra Papell finished tied for 37th with a three-round score of 233 (76-78-79).
Jessica Gregory followed Papell posting a score of 239 (80-79-80), tying her for 57th.
Panitta Yusabai and Kavita Sehmi finished tied with each other in 71st with a three-round score of 247. Yusabai posted a -1 (71) in the third round, the best single-round score for Maryland in the tournament.
“The team is working hard and learning from every competitive round they have,” Cantu said. “We are working on minimizing mistakes which will help us in the long run.”
The Terrapins played spoiler to a possible all-Ivy League finish. Columbia finished in first with a three-round score of 894, followed by Yale and Harvard who shot 895 and 897, respectively. Princeton rounded out the top-five with a score of 911.
The Terps return to action when they travel to Ponte Verda, Fla. for the JU Classic beginning on Oct. 13.
