COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Senior Maxine Fluharty of the Maryland field hockey team was named the Longstreth/NFHCA Mid Atlantic Region Player of the Year Tuesday and is one of five finalists for the Longstreth/NFHCA National Player of the Year Award.
Fluharty started in all 23 of the Terrapins' games and served as team captain this year. She finished the year with 15 goals, including four game-winners, and three assists for 33 points as a vital part of the nation's top scoring offense. She started the year on the Big Ten Players to Watch list and was named Big Ten Player of the Year and to the All-Big Ten First Team, as well as the All-Big Ten Tournament Team.
Fluharty notched 38 career goals, 19 career assists and 95 career points. She was a member of the 2011 NCAA championship team, the 2013 ACC championship team and the 2014 Big Ten championship team. She was an NFHCA All-American in 2013 and a four-time NFHCA All-Region Team honoree, as well as an All-ACC Team honoree as a junior.
Fluharty was named to the NFHCA All-Mid Atlantic Region First Team Monday, along with teammates Anna Dessoye, Katie Gerzabek, Sarah Sprink and Moira Putsch. Alyssa Parker and Steffi Schneid were named to the Second Team.
The other Regional Players of the year are Connecticut's Roisin Upton (Mideast), Albany's Paula Heuser (Northeast), Wake Forest's Anna Kozniuk (South) and Iowa's Natalie Cafone (West).
Maryland won the Big Ten regular season title with a 7-1 conference record. This marked the Terps' 20th straight NCAA Tournament appearance under head coach Missy Meharg.
