
Fluharty, Putsch Win Weekly Honors

ROSEMONT, Ill. – Senior Maxine Fluharty and freshman Moira Putsch of the second-ranked Maryland field hockey team were named Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week and Freshman of the Week Tuesday for the final week of the regular season.
The Terrapins earned at least one weekly honor in seven of the 10 weeks in the regular season. Maryland picked up 11 weekly honors on the year.
The Terps routed American, 8-1, Wednesday, then beat No. 14 Iowa, 4-1, Saturday to win the first Big Ten title in school history.
Fluharty added five points in those two games. Against the Hawkeyes, on her Senior Day, Fluharty scored the Terps' first and fourth goals to seal the win. She assisted on Maryland's second goal in their rout of American. Fluharty is the Terps' leading scorer with 15 goals and has led them to their 12 straight wins, including seven straight conference games, since Sept. 26.
Putsch was key in the two games last week as well with six points total. Against American, Putsch scored the Terps' fourth and fifth goals and assisted on the sixth. Against No. 14 Iowa, she assisted to Fluharty on the Terps' first score that was the gamewinner in the 17th minute. This is the fourth Freshman of the Week honor for Putsch this year.
Maryland (16-2, 7-1 B1G) will be the top seed in its first Big Ten Tournament, which begins Thursday at Michigan's Phyllis Ocker Field in Ann Arbor. The Terps will take on eighth-seeded Ohio State (6-11, 1-7) Thursday at 10 a.m.

With a win over the Buckeyes Thursday, the Terrapins will play either fourth-seeded Michigan or fifth-seeded Iowa Friday at 1 p.m. The Big Ten championship game will be Sunday at 1 p.m.

Twelve Terps have combined to score 75 goals this year and four Terrapins have scored at least 10 goals –Fluharty (15), Sarah Sprink (12), Putsch (11) and Anna Dessoye (11). Gerzabek leads Maryland, and the Big Ten, in assists with 20. Dessoye leads the team with 38 points.
