
Maryland Takes on Penn State in Big Ten Semis

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The top-seeded Maryland field hockey team (17-2, 7-1 B1G) will take on fourth-seeded Penn State (15-4, 5-3) Friday at 1 p.m. in the Big Ten Tournament semifinals at Michigan's Phyllis Ocker Field.

• Maryland has won 12 straight games since Sept. 26. The Terrapins beat eighth-seeded Ohio State, 5-0, Thursday in the Big Ten Tournament quarterfinals. Sarah Sprink scored twice, Moira Putsch added two assists and Carrie Hanks, Katie Gerzabek and Anna Dessoye also scored. RECAP | STATS
• Twelve Terps have combined to score 84 goals and four Terrapins have scored at least 10 goals - Fluharty (15), Sarah Sprink (14), Moira Putsch (11) and Anna Dessoye (12). Katie Gerzabek leads Maryland, and the Big Ten, in assists with 20. Anna Dessoye leads the team with 40 points. Gerzabek and Dessoye are third and fifth in the country in assists per game.
• Senior Maxine Fluharty was named Big Ten Player of the Year, Sarah Sprink was named Defensive Player of the Year and Moira Putsch earned the Freshman of the Year honor. Head coach Missy Meharg was named Big Ten Coach of the Year.
• Redshirt senior Brooke Cabrera, senior Katie Gerzabek and junior Anna Dessoye were all named to the All-Big Ten Second Team. Fluharty and Sprink were named to the First Team. Junior Alyssa Parker was honored with one of the league's Sportsmanship Awards.

• Penn State is 15-4 overall and went 5-3 in Big Ten play. The Nittany Lions are currently ranked No. 5 in the Penn Monto/NFHCA Division I Coaches poll. Taylor Herold leads them with 18 goals this year.
• Penn State owns the all-time series over Maryland, 20-12-1, but the Terps have won the last three straight games and eight of the last nine matchups since 1994. Maryland in the rankings
• Maryland is ranked No. 2 in the latest Penn Monto/NFHCA Division I Coaches poll, released Nov. 4. They have been ranked No. 2 for six weeks - since Sept. 30.
• The Terps have been ranked in the top five for the last 21 straight weeks, dating back to the preseason poll in 2013.
•Maryland has been ranked in the top three in 146 of 168 polls since the 1999 season. The Terrapins have appeared in the top five in 163 in those 168 polls.
• Prior to the poll released Oct. 9, 2012, the Terrapins had not been outside the top five since before the 1999 season. They were ranked sixth in the Oct. 9 poll.

2014 Team Captains
• Three players have been named team captains for the 2014 season. Maxine Fluharty, Katie Gerzabek and Sarah Sprink will serve as the team's captains.
"Maxine, Katie and Sarah are a talented dynamic, hardworking leadership trio," head coach Missy Meharg said. "The front field, the midfield, the backfield are represented by these NCAA/FIH experienced players. All have been honored by their leagues and all three represented their countries in the Junior World Cup. They understand that the way we train and prepare puts us in position to win championships in November."

• The Terrapins joined the Big Ten conference this year, after playing in the ACC for 31 years. Big Ten field hockey is now the biggest conference in the history of the sport in the NCAA with nine teams - Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Michigan State, Northwestern, Ohio State, Penn State, Rutgers and Maryland.
• The Terps are 90-32-3 (.732) all-time against Big Ten opponents.
• Head coach Missy Meharg is 73-12-1 (.855) vs. Big Ten opponents in her 27 years at the helm of the Maryland field hockey program.
HOME SWEET HOME
Since its opening in 2003, the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex has provided the Maryland hockey program a huge home field advantage.
• The Terps are 137-15 (.901) all-time at the Complex.
• Maryland won 38 straight games at the Complex from Oct.11, 2008 through Oct. 14, 2011. The streak ended with a 5-2 loss to then-No. 1 Old Dominion.
• The Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex has played home to 22 of Maryland's NCAA Tournament games, including two Final Fours (2007, 2010). The Terrapins are 21-1 in those games and won the 2010 national title on their home field.

• The Maryland field hockey team has increasingly attracted more and more fans to the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex season after season. The Terrapins have led the nation in attendance since 2010.
• In 2013, Maryland led the country in attendance with 8,176 fans coming out to see the Terrapins. On average, 629 fans came to each game, which was nearly 200 more than North Carolina's average of 438 which was second in the country.
• An NCAA-record crowd of 2,381 came out to watch as Maryland beat North Carolina 3-2 in double overtime for the 2010 national championship at the Complex.

Three Terps Selected To Big Ten Players To Watch List
• Junior Anna Dessoye and seniors Maxine Fluharty and Katie Gerzabek were named to the Big Ten Players to Watch List before the season started. The full list is at http://www.bigten.org/sports/w-fieldh/spec-rel/082114aab.html.
• Dessoye is Maryland's leading returning scorer, after she notched 13 goals and 16 assists in 2013. Fluharty added 12 goals and seven assists last year, while Gerzabek scored five goals and notched three assists in her 19 games played.
