Box Score ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The second-ranked Maryland field hockey team fell to No. 10 Northwestern, 3-1, in the Big Ten Tournament final Sunday in Ann Arbor.
Junior Sarah Sprink scored to tie the game in the first half, then the Terrapins (18-3) threatened throughout the second half. Redshirt senior Brooke Cabrera picked up seven saves.
"Certainly, a disappointing outcome," head coach Missy Meharg said. "Northwestern played with a vengeance and at a championship level. In debriefing with the players, there's no real excuses, other than that you've got to play every second of every half."
Northwestern (16-6) took its first lead with 11 minutes left in the first when Lisa McCarthy scored off a rebound on the first penalty corner of the game.
A minute and a half later, Sprink banged in the equalizer off the Terps' first penalty corner of the game. Junior Anna Dessoye and senior Katie Gerzabek set up the play. They stayed tied at 1-1 at the break.
The Wildcats took back the lead five minutes in to the second half. The Terps' drew stops on two straight corners, then Northwestern's Isabel Flens scored on the third for the go-ahead goal.
Northwestern made it a 3-1 lead with 7:03 to play off of its eighth penalty corner.
The Wildcats took 14 shots and the Terps took 13. Northwestern had eight penalty corners to the Terrapins' six.
Senior Maxine Fluharty and Sprink were named to the Big Ten All-Tournament Team.
