COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Head coach Missy Meharg of the Maryland field hockey team was named the 4U Field Hockey / National Field Hockey Coaches Association Mid Atlantic Region Coach of the Year Wednesday for the 15th time in her 27 years at the helm of the program.
Meharg, who was named Big Ten Coach of the Year last month, is one of five finalists for the NFHCA National Coach of the Year honor, an award she has received nine times. She was last named Mid Atlantic Region Coach of the Year in 2011.
In their first year in a new league, Meharg and her staff orchestrated the Terps' run through the season to the Big Ten regular season title, the first Big Ten title in school history. They went 19-4 on the year and went on a 13-game win streak, which included seven straight conference wins to claim the regular season title.
She's led the Terrapins to a record of 490-119-9 for a winning percentage of .800 over her 27 years at the helm of the program. Meharg has earned conference coach of the year honors eight times in her career.
The Terps led the nation in scoring with an average of 4.0 goals per game, in points per game with 11.26 and in scoring margin (+2.83).
The Terrapins made the 20th straight NCAA Tournament appearance this season, the longest active streak in the nation.
