COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The Maryland field hockey team, the nation's best offensive unit, won the Score More Challenge, a season-long scoring contest for charity, which was hosted by USA Field Hockey and made possible by Ecore Athletics.
ECORE Athletic is a company that transforms reclaimed waste into unique performance surfaces. All participating Division 1 Field Hockey programs earned $1 for every goal scored throughout the regular season, and an upgraded $5 per goal during the NCAA tournament.
The combined efforts from each team during the Score More Challenge led to 600 goals and a cumulative total of $1,597. ECORE supplied the funds and donated all Score More proceeds to the Pennsylvania Special Olympics.
"Every year field hockey players and coaches thrive to be in the right place at the right time to raise an NCAA trophy,” head coach Missy Meharg said. “This season, thanks to USA Field Hockey's Score More Challenge, made possible by ECORE Athletics, the incentive and concept of scoring goals to raise money for the the Special Olympics of Pennsylvania was inspirational. On behalf of the University of Maryland team and attack specialist Dina Rizzo, we thank U.S. National Team players Lauren Crandall, Katie Reinprecht and Stefanie Fee for making the Score More Challenge possible.”
The Terrapins led the nation in scoring by a wide margin with a total of 92 goals on the season. Four Terrapins scored at least 10 goals - Sarah Sprink (16), Maxine Fluharty (15), Moira Putsch (12) and Anna Dessoye (12).
Twenty-six universities around the country participated in the Score More Challenge: Yale University, Missouri State University, Villanova University, University of California Berkeley, Brown University, Sacred Heart University, Quinnipiac University, Indiana University, Duke University, Drexel University, Bucknell University, Old Dominion University, Princeton University, University of Massachusetts, University of Pennsylvania, Wake Forest University, University of North Carolina, Syracuse University, Providence University, University of Virginia, Temple University, Northwestern University, University of Louisville, Hofstra University, and the University of Iowa.
