Fun Fact: "Heroes Game"
When Nebraska joined the Big Ten conference in 2011, establishing a trophy game between Nebraska and neighboring Iowa seemed natural. The game is not only played for bragging rights, but it also serves as a platform to honor everyday citizens of Iowa and Nebraska who perform extraordinary acts of heroism.
One chosen 'hero' from each state is invited to attend the game, receive on-field recognition, and have his or her name inscribed on the game trophy. Sponsored by grocery store chain Hy-Vee, “The Heroes Game” also works to benefit a chosen non-profit organization doing “incredible good” in the heartland each year.
The game trophy, with a wooden base and topped with a brushed silver football, is adorned with images of Nebraska's Memorial Stadium and Iowa's Kinnick Stadium, and a list of traditions of each institution. The bottom of the trophy is ringed with engraved corn stalks in a stone base.
