Terps Fall At No. 1 UCLA In 2014 Opener

LOS ANGELES – Junior goalkeeper Rachelle Beanlands made a career-best 10 saves, but the University of Maryland women's soccer team dropped its 2014 season opener, 3-0, at No. 1 UCLA Friday evening at Drake Stadium.

"We ran into a superior team this evening. Credit to Coach Cromwell and her staff because they aren't just a talented team they are coached extremely well," said Maryland head coach Jonathan Morgan. "I'm proud of our kids fight tonight and focus on the task, but UCLA's quality was just too much. We'll get some rest and begin preparing for a good Pepperdine team on Sunday."

The Bruins (1-0-0), the defending NCAA champions which returned 10 of 11 starters from the 2013 team, opened the scoring in the 26th minute when Megan Oyster finished a corner kick by Rosie White.

The UCLA lead grew to 2-0 less than a minute later when Sam Mewis got through the Terrapin defense and laced a shot into the Maryland net.

White added the Bruins' third goal in the 33rd minute, finishing a pass from Sarah Killion.

That was all the scoring UCLA would post on Maryland as Beanlands made eight of her 10 saves after the 33rd minute.

The defeat is the Terps' first in a season opener since 2003. Maryland had been 8-0-2 in its last 10 season openers before facing the Bruins.

Maryland will wrap up its two-game road trip in California on Sunday, Aug. 24 when it takes on Pepperdine at 4 p.m. EST. That match is scheduled to be streamed live on pepperdinesports.com.
