COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Maryland women's golf team will begin their inaugural Big Ten season under the leadership of first-year head coach Diana Cantú.
Cantú inherits five returning players from last year's team and adds one freshman, Kavita Sehmi.
The Terps are represented by four different countries including the United States, England, Thailand and United Arab Emirates.
“It is a very diverse team,” Cantú said. “It is not only the age and experience that separates them, but also their background.”
Maryland will rely on their upperclassman for leadership early in the season, especially from Juliet Vongphoumy, the lone senior on the roster. Vongphoumy is coming off an All-ACC season and was also dubbed a Big Ten Golfer to Watch.
Sehmi, also named to the Big Ten Golfers to Watch List, is poised for a successful freshman campaign.
“She [Sehmi] is a very hard worker,” Cantú said. “She expects to come in and make a big impact right away.”
The Terps open up the fall season at the Cougar Classic in Charleston, S.C. followed by four tournaments to round out the fall before heading into spring season play featuring the Big Ten Championships.
“I'm looking forward to coming in and setting my own culture,” Cantú said. “I'm excited to come in here and take it to a new level.”
