MANAKIN-SABOT, Va. - The Maryland men's golf team finished third out of 13 teams and just a few strokes behind tournament winner Virginia Tech in the Janney VCU Shootout Tuesday at the Hermitage Country Club in Manakin-Sabot, Va. Five Terrapins finished in the top 20.
"We went toe-to-toe with Virginia Tech and Iowa State, who are both really good teams that competed in the NCAA Championships last year," head coach Jason Rodenhaver said. "We are a really good team too and I'm proud of the guys. We lost a few shots coming in, but we were much improved form a year ago. I'm really proud of my guys."
Senior Connor Tendall tied for third on the leaderboard to lead the Terps for the best finish of his career. He went three-under in the third and final round Tuesday to move up 11 spots in the standings. He finished with a combined score of 215 (74-72-69), which was one stroke under par on the tournament.
Sophomore Victor Fox finished tied for seventh in the standings for his fourth career top 10 finish. He went two-over on the weekend with a 218 (72-72-74). Freshman David Kocher tied for 12th with a 219 (75-70-74) to go three-over total.
Junior Tom Harris moved up three places with his 221 (74-74-73), which was five over total and tied him for 16th. Senior Ben Warnquist finished tied for 20th with his 223 (74-75-75).
Senior Eric Urda finished with a score of 240 (82-81-77) on the weekend.
The Terrapins finished one stroke behind Iowa State, who finished second in the team standings, and seven strokes behind the Hokies.
Next, the Terrapins will compete at the Badger Invitational at the University Ridge Golf Course in Madison, Wisc. next Sunday through Tuesday.
