Box Score EAST LANSING, Mich. – The fourth-ranked Maryland field hockey team cruised past No. 18 Michigan State, 4-2, Sunday in the Terps' first-ever game at the Spartans' Ralph Young Field. Senior captain Maxine Fluharty led the way with two goals on the day.
“We elevated our game today playing high performance hockey with solid finishing,” head coach Missy Meharg said. “We had 17 players contribute to today's win. This Big Ten weekend in Michigan has been a huge growth opportunity for our squad. We could not be more pleased with how professional, accommodating and naturally competitive both Michigan and Michigan State have been.”
Fluharty opened the scoring for Maryland (7-2, 2-1 B1G), when she scored off a pass from redshirt sophomore Emma Rissinger just over five minutes before halftime. Junior captain Sarah Sprink scored on a penalty corner at the break to make it a two-goal lead for the Terps.
Fluharty struck again eight minutes into the second period when she tipped in Sprink's pass from the top of the circle. Less than two minutes later, freshman Moira Putsch scored on a redirect from senior captain Katie Gerzabek to make it a 4-0 lead for the Terps.
Michigan State (5-4, 1-2) got on the board with under seven minutes to play when Abby Barker scored. Jenni Smith scored the Spartans' second goal on a penalty corner with time expired.
The Terrapins outshot the Spartans, 20-13. Redshirt senior goalkeeper Brooke Cabrera picked up a save and held Michigan State scoreless through her 50 minutes in goal. Junior goalkeeper Jill Genovese came on and notched two saves.
Maryland owns the all-time series over Michigan State, 4-0.
