Box Score COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The top-ranked Maryland field hockey team cruised past Miami (Ohio) Sunday for a 3-1 win at the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex.
Juniors Anna Dessoye and Sarah Sprink, as well as senior Maxine Fluharty scored for the Terrapins. The Terps outshot the Redhawks, 28-4, and had 12 penalty corners to three.
“It was quite a weekend,” head coach Missy Meharg said. “Miami of Ohio is a really well-coached team. They've got some really strong individual players from all over the world. I'm just very pleased Maryland is putting over 20 shots up there again. We penetrated the circle. I'm pleased and we'll continue to work on our goal shooting.”
The Terrapins (3-1) took scored their first goal of the day when Dessoye tucked in a shot behind the Redhawks goalkeeper on the left side, off a pass from freshman Moira Putsch in the 22nd minute.
Just over five minutes later, Fluharty scored off a penalty corner set up by Dessoye and senior captain Katie Gerzabek. The Terps took a 2-0 lead at halftime.
Sprink made it a three-goal lead for the Terps with a score off a penalty corner in the 49th minute. Senior Steffi Schneid notched the assist on the play.
Miami (Ohio) got on the board with four seconds left in the game when Henni Otten scored off a penalty corner.
Redhawks goalkeeper Alysa Xavier notched 11 saves on the day and redshirt senior goalkeeper Brooke Cabrera had one for the Terrapins.
Next, the Terrapins will host American, Drexel, Temple and Towson in the Terrapin Invitational next weekend at the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex. American and Towson will play at 11 a.m. Saturday, with the Terrapins taking on Drexel at 1 p.m. Maryland will play Temple at 2 p.m. Sunday and will be followed by a matchup between American and Drexel at 4 p.m.
Admission to all four games is free. Fans planning to attend Saturday's games will be directed to park in the Terrapin Trail Garage near the XFINITY Center and will be charged $17 due to the Terrapins' noon football game vs. West Virginia. Parking is free for Sunday's games.
