Holliday Named Maryland Sportscaster of the Year

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Legendary University of Maryland broadcaster Johnny Holliday has been named the 2014 Maryland Sportscaster of the Year as announced recently by the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association (NSSA).

Holliday, who is in his 36th year as the 'Voice of the Terrapins,' will be honored for the achievement at the 56th Annual NSSA Awards Weekend from June 6-8, 2015, in Salisbury, N.C. Jeff Zrebiec of the Baltimore Sun was awarded Maryland Sportswriter of the Year. 

Holliday joined the Terrapin Sports Radio Network in 1979 and has been on the call for some of the most memorable moments in Maryland history. Inducted into the Radio and Television Broadcasters Hall of Fame in 2003, Holliday has called more than 1,300 Terrapin football and basketball games, including the 2002 national championship season and the 2004 ACC Tournament title. He also co-hosts the Randy Edsall Radio Show and the Mark Turgeon Radio Show. 

The legendary broadcaster was the public address announcer for the Cleveland Browns, Oakland Raiders, San Francisco Warriors, and Washington Bullets.  In addition, Dick Vitale named Holliday one of his “top 15 play-by-play voices in the nation”.  In 2005, he was given the Lindsay Nelson Outstanding Sportscaster award by the All-American Football Foundation, and in 2006, he was honored by the National Football Foundation and the College Football Hall of Fame with the Chris Schenkel award.

Holliday was born and raised in Miami, Fla.  Before coming to Washington in 1969, he was a top-rated radio personality in Cleveland, New York City and San Francisco.  Before giving up music, Holliday was named America's number one disc jockey.  A visit to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland will enable you to listen to Johnny during his DJ days in Cleveland.
