Each week during the 2014-15 season a Maryland student-athlete, who has shown excellence on and off the playing field, will be selected as the Solomon Eye Associates Terp of the Week. This week's Solomon Eye Associates Terp of the Week is senior Karen Tang of the gymnastics team.
COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Karen Tang stepped up to the uneven bars last Thursday in the sixth and final spot for the Terps. Having set a goal to score a 9.900 or above on the event, she knew how important tallying a score that high would be to the team in their Big Ten opener, and so, with her parents in attendance, she did just that.
The Agawam, Mass. native tied a school record and set a personal best on bars with a 9.925 as the Terps toppled #11 Minnesota in their Big Ten opener. Tang's score was the highest score received throughout the entire meet. Tang also tallied a 9.700 on vault in Maryland's 194.325-193.350 triumph.
“Karen [Tang] has done this time after time,” Head coach Brett Nelligan said of Tang's performance, “Whenever we need a strong performance on bars, she's there and we can count on her. She's set a goal to score a 9.900 or above for four years now and she finally got it. It was a great moment for her.”
Maryland (1-2, 1-0 B1G) will head to Happy Valley on Saturday, Jan. 24, to take on #13 Penn State at 4 p.m. ET.
