Box Score COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The sixth-ranked Maryland field hockey team (16-3, 8-0 B1G) picked up its 14th straight win Sunday with a 2-1 double overtime win at Iowa (9-9, 2-6) to close the regular season.
Sophomore Lein Holsboer scored the game winner in the 88th minute to seal Maryland's sole possession of the Big Ten regular season title.
“Iowa was exceedingly fast and a fantastic competitor,” head coach Missy Meharg said. “This time of year, it's really great to get these experiences like we've had with Indiana and Iowa and it can only help us as we head into postseason.”
Senior Anna Dessoye put the Terrapins on the board first when she tapped in a score 18 minutes in for the one-goal lead. Maryland held onto its 1-0 lead through halftime.
Midway through the second half, the Hawkeyes' Mallory Lefkowitz scored off a penalty corner to tie the game in the 53rd minute.
Maryland outshot Iowa 5-1 in the first 15 minute overtime period, but Holsboer broke free three minutes into the second overtime to score for the win.
Freshman goalkeeper Sarah Holliday made four saves for the Terrapins. Maryland outshot Iowa, 13-11 on the day.
Maryland clinched at least a share of the Big Ten's top spot last Friday with a win over Indiana. Maryland has now won 22 conference titles between their time in the Big Ten and ACC.
Dessoye was named Big Ten Co-Offensive Player of the Week Tuesday for the third time this year. She scored the game-winner to clinch the Terps' Big Ten title in overtime Friday vs. Indiana and added three assists in Sunday's win over Towson.
Thirty of Maryland's 64 goals have come off of penalty corners this season. The Terrapins have allowed just seven goals off of corners this year.
Next, the Terrapins will play in the Big Ten Tournament next week in Bloomington, Ind. The Big Ten Tournament begins Thursday, Nov. 5 through Sunday, Nov. 8. Game times, seeds and television information will be available later in the weekend.
