Box Score

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The eighth-ranked Maryland field hockey team (10-3, 4-0 Big Ten) shut out Penn State (5-7, 1-3), 1-0, Friday afternoon in State College, Pa. With the win, the Terrapins have won nine straight games over the last five weeks.

The Terrapins took 15 shots to the Nittany Lions' nine. Freshman goalkeeper Sarah Holliday made three saves and redshirt senior Kasey Tapman made two defensive saves to help preserve the shutout victory.

Maryland's backfield played tough and exceptionally well tactically,” head coach Missy Meharg said. “Earning a shutout and giving up one shot to a feisty Penn State attack showed discipline. Penn State took the energy of the match away from us early on, but after halftime the Terps held control of the game. Delaney Leathers at left defensive back was player if the match for the day and Alyssa Parker scored a beautiful goal.”

Senior Alyssa Parker scored the game's lone goal when she scored on a short shot from the left side off a pass from sophomore Lein Holsboer in the 19th minute.

Senior Sarah Sprink and freshman Linnea Gonzales garnered Big Ten weekly awards Tuesday. Sprink was named Defensive Player of the Week for third time in her career and Gonzales earned her third Freshman of the Week honor.

Sprink helped lead Maryland at both ends of the field with three goals and an assist in the Terrapins' wins at Ohio State and Miami (Ohio) last weekend. She notched both game-winning goals on the weekend. Gonzales kept up her offensive dominance, scoring in each of the Terrapins' wins. She leads the Terrapins in scoring with 10 goals this season.

Maryland is ranked No. 8 in the latest Penn Monto/NFHCA Division I Coaches Poll, released Oct 6.

Next, the Terrapins will play at No. 15 Old Dominion (6-3) Wednesday at 5 p.m. in Norfolk, Va. The Maryland-Old Dominion game will not streamed online for a fee through ODUSports.com. Live Stats will be available and updates will also be posted to the Maryland Field Hockey Twitter feed.
