
Maryland Announces Full Class of 2016

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The highly-successful Maryland field hockey program will welcome eight new student-athletes next summer as part of the second phase of Maryland's class of 2016. Logan Edmondson, Noelle Frost, Kelee Lepage, Madison Maguire, Sophie Pelzer, Lexi Silver, Emily Thomas and Anouk van Asbeck all signed on to come to College Park in the summer of 2016.
"We are delighted to welcome 10 new Terps to the Maryland field hockey program in 2016," head coach Missy Meharg said. "This class kept getting better and better and we are very excited about the common character they share.
They are a fast-thinking, risky, intellectually creative and an exceedingly competitive group of young women. We welcome this broad blend of women and families from Illinois and Holland to our historical cast of Maryland, New Jersey and Pennsylvania talent. Your new life chapter and team awaits you with enthusiasm in College Park."
Lizzy Dessoye and Ena Belch signed on to enroll in the University of Maryland in January 2016, Meharg and her staff announced earlier this month.

About Edmondson: Played lacrosse and field hockey at Archbishop Spalding...helped lead field hockey team to first place conference finish in sophomore and senior seasons...named to the Capital Gazette All-County Team in 2014...played for the Spark Field Hockey Club for one year and the Gaels Field Hockey Club for four...participated in USA Field Hockey's Futures program.
Meharg on Edmondson: "Logan is a naturally powerful field hockey player with quick hands and very mature tactical awareness. She was a vital piece of Archbishop Spalding's recent state championship team, serving a dominant role in the midfield unit. We are excited to have Logan join the program and play collegiate field hockey. Being recruited as a talented field hockey and lacrosse player can be tough to choose which sport."
Edmondson on Maryland: "I chose Maryland for the awesome education and the chance to y to play for one of the best teams in the country.
NOELLE FROST

About Frost: Played three years of varsity field hockey...team won two county titles, regional titles and were state semifinalists two years straight...named First Team All-American, All-Region, All-State, All-Metro and All-County as a junior...also named a Scholar Athlete...played for the Spark Field Hockey Club...has played in USA Field Hockey's Futures program.
Meharg on Frost: "Noelle is as quick as a cat in the goal cage. He natural athletic instincts to get hit by the ball make her very difficult to score on. She has a huge passion for hard work while serving the team. She loves her cage. Noelle has studied and is training to become a professional umpire. As our game's rules aggressively evolve, Noelle will grow well in the critical area of the goal."
Edmondson on Frost: "I came to Maryland for the location, team dynamic and the coaches."
KELEE LEPAGE

Honey Brook, Pa. • Twin Valley High School
About Lepage: Played four years at Twin Valley...has helped lead team to three Berks County titles and the 2015 PIAA AA State title...named First Team All-State as a sophomore and junior so far...named First Team All-Berks County as a sophomore, junior, senior...named Berks County Player of the Year as a senior...has scored over 30 goals in her senior season so far and leads Berks County in goals and assists...member of Under-19 Junior National Team...also named to 4X100 relay All-Division Team with school's track team...plays for X-Calibur Hockey Club and is captain in her senior year.
Meharg on Lepage: "Kelee is powerful, athletic, aggressive and can score. Her Twin Valley High School team recently won the Pennsylvania state title with Kelee scoring 48 goals along the way. Kelee participates in every regional, national and global hockey opportunity available to her. For a young high performance player, she is disciplined, works hard alone and is a stellar student."
Lepage on Maryland: "I fell in love with everything about the University of Maryland on my first visit. Missy, Dina and Joppe have made me feel like I was a Terp from the start. The campus is the perfect size and distance from home. There are a wide range of quality academic opportunities. The team made me feel at home on every visit and I will become a part of an outstanding field hockey program. GO TERPS!!"
MADISON MAGUIRE

Rumson, N.J. • Rumson Fair Haven Regional High School
About Maguire: Played field hockey, basketball and lacrosse all four years of high school...helped high school field hocket team to three state titles...named First Team All-Shore in senior, junior and sophomore seasons and Third Team as a freshman...also named Shore Conference Player of the Year as a junior and First Team All-State in 2014 as well...to date, team has won conference in her senior season...first 100 goal scorer in school history...helped basketball team to a state title as a freshman...lacrosse team has won three straight conference titles and the 2015 state title...played for X-calibur Hockey Club.
Meharg on Maguire: "Madison is an all-around field hockey player. She plays anywhere on the field as her technical skills are diverse and well-trained. Madison creatively and confidently possesses the ball in traffic, counter-defends with natural angles and can finish. This season she had 42 goals coming from the midfield line. She is a pressure player in attack penalty corners where time and score are on the line."
Maguire on Maryland: "It's a great school, with a great field hockey program, that will push me to be the best I can be."
SOPHIE PELZER
Forward/Midfield
Soest, The Netherlands • Het Baarnsch Lyceum
About Pelzer: Member of the Dutch Under-16 and Under-18 national teams....currently plays for Under-18 Laren Mixed Hockey Club in Dutch national competition...has also been included in training sessions with the First Ladies Team, the highest level in Holland...helped team reach semifinals in each of the last four years...played on regional Dutch teams before she was 12.
Meharg on Pelzer: "Sophie comes to Maryland with a wealth of front field, high performance training and competition. Sophie is fast in mind, fast in body, very feisty and will be a welcome addition to our team attack. Sophie is a student of the game and she enjoys talking hockey. Whether tactical, historical or current trends, Sophie has a deep-rooted passion and love for the game."
Pelzer on Maryland: "It is always difficult to determine whether you are making the right choice from a distance, but from the first contact, it felt good. Skype calls with the coaching staff, Joppe visiting The Netherlands, watching some games on the Internet, and my short visit to the university confirmed the feeling I had. Great hockey and a great university! I am looking forward to come to the USA next summer."
LEXI SILVER

About Silver: Has played forward and midfield over her four years at Lake Forest Academy and also played lacrosse...served as team captain in senior season in 2015...named to the Illinois Field Hockey All-State Team in 2014 and 2015...named Most Valuable Offensive Player of her team as a junior...named Sophomore Female Athlete of the Year in 2013...named to the Illinois Lacrosse All-State Team in 2014...played for Windy City Field Hockey, coached by former Terrapin and Olympian Katie Kauffman Beach.
Meharg on Silver: "Lexi is gritty, risky and hard-working. She is a pure fast athlete. taking her competitive heart to the NCAA level in hockey. Having been trained under former Terp Kate Kauffman Beach's Windy City Club, we have watched Lexi's development for quite some time and are excited to add her to our offensive unit. Our speed of attack and tempo of self play suits Lexi's character very well."
Silver on Maryland: "My club coach, Katie Beach, played at Maryland. She is an inspiration to me and has helped me so much in turning me into the player I am today. I love and trust Katie and her praise about Maryland, but it wasn't until I actually stepped on campus and met Missy, Dina and Joppe that I fell in love! The coaches are amazing, the girls on the team are the best and the school as a whole is incredible. I wanted to come out east and try something different. I love everything about Maryland and I can't wait to be a Terp!"
EMILY THOMAS

About Thomas: Has played midfield at South River for four years...scored 10 goals with 6 assists in her career...served as team captain in 2015...named First Team All-County by Coaches, Second Team All-County and Second Team All-State as a junior in 2014...team won Anne Arundel County title as a freshman and sophomore and 4A State title in her freshman year...has also played for Freedom Hockey Club...team won National Club Championship in 2015 and took first in the National Indoor Tournament.
Meharg on Thomas: "Emily is a smooth, gifted midfielder who can play in a variety of positions for the team. She is a quiet, confident and a very intellectually motivated young woman. Emily executes elimination skills at top speed and is naturally disciplined in tactical transitions. Coming off an ACL injury, surgery and rehab will get her ready to play for us."
Thomas on Maryland: "I've been supporting the Terps as long as I can remember because both of my parents attended Maryland and now my brother is there as well, so it just feels like I belong there. Also, after I tore my ACL on campus in April, the coaches, players, and everyone else I met there were extremely helpful, and I knew I wanted to be part of that atmosphere."
ANOUK VAN ASBECK

About van Asbeck: Captain of the Gooische Hockey Club Under-18 Team...has played at Gooische since 2005...has also played for her school team the last few years and helped win regional competition.
Meharg on van Asbeck: "Anouk is a pure and self-driven athlete that thrives on the opportunity of life through the game hockey. She has premier-level possession and passing skills coupled with a risky, gracious team attitude that will serve everyone well. Anouk was born in Connecticut, living her early years in the U.S. before moving back to Holland."
Van Asbeck on Maryland: "I chose Maryland because of the coaches and the team. The coaches create a professional and hardworking but also fun and positive atmosphere. I loved spending time with the team and coaches. It is a great family that I am excited to be a part of. Because of the balance between sports and academics, I felt that Maryland was the best fit for me. I am honored to play for the Maryland field hockey team and excited to be coached by Missy, Joppe and Dina."
