Box Score

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. –  Sophomore Lein Holsboer scored the game-winning goal in double overtime to lift No. 7 Maryland (18-3) past No. 17 Northwestern (13-8), 2-1, in the Big Ten Tournament semifinals at Indiana University Friday afternoon. The Terrapins will make their second straight appearance in the Big Ten championship game Sunday at noon on BTN.

Maryland controlled much of the game, taking 29 shots to the Wildcats' 15. The two teams were scoreless through the first half, then Northwestern took the lead in the second period. Fifth-year senior Welma Luus scored to force overtime and Holsboer notched the gamewinner. Freshman goalkeeper Sarah Holliday tied her career-high six saves.

"Maryland played a brand of hockey that we're known for," head coach Missy Meharg said. "We brought an energy and grit and a tactical plan that was really well-executed. Tracey Fuchs and her staff do a fabulous job and you have to be ready for a chess match. I applaud them, but Maryland was spectacular today."

Northwestern took the first lead 15 minutes into the second half when Dominique Masters deflected in a shot off a penalty corner with 19:01 to play.

Ten minutes later, fifth-year senior Welma Luus forced a loose ball past the Wildcats' goalkeeper to tie the game with 9:10 to play.

The Terrapins controlled both overtime periods as well. Northwestern took four shots early in the first overtime, then Maryland took 10 unanswered shots.

Just over a minute into the second overtime period, Holsboer brought the ball down the sideline, passed it to sophomore Carrie Hanks near the circle, who tapped it back to her. Holsboer flipped in a high shot for the score.
