COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Three former members of the Maryland field hockey program competed with the seventh-ranked U.S. National Team in a test series vs. No. 10 Japan last week at the Spooky Nook Sports Complex in Lancaster, Pa. The U.S. dominated the series, not allowing a goal to the Japanese team.

Ali McEvoy, Katie O'Donnell and Jill Witmer, who are members of the U.S. Senior National Team, all competed in the series. The U.S. won the first match, 3-0, tied the second, 0-0, and won the third and fourth matches, 2-0 and 3-0. 

"It was a great experience to work against a team that presented us with different situations that we are not as familiar with," McEvoy said. "Japan's game plans allowed for us to face different scenarios together, and gave us the ability to have the conversations within the team."

"I thoroughly enjoyed playing against Japan last week," Witmer said. "With this being my first opportunity to play this team, I was impressed by their quickness and strong defense. I think it was a solid performance from our team and a good learning experience.

Recent Terrapin graduate Anna Dessoye and current Terp Carrie Hanks competed with the U.S. Developmental Squad competed in a match against Japan's squad of national team, developmental and Under-21 players.

"It was a great experience to get to play against international competition like the Japan Senior Team," Hanks said. "The game at that level requires fast moving and fast thinking - if you make a mistake there isn't time to reflect on it right after it happens because the play moves on and you can't miss a beat. It was a really cool opportunity to be given to get a sense of what competition is like at the senior national level."
