COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Led by an outstanding all-around performance from senior Kathy Tang, the Red Squad defeated the Black Squad, 79.400-79.300, in the Maryland gymnastics team's annual intrasquad scrimmage Saturday evening.
“I was really impressed tonight,” head coach Brett Nelligan. “We have five freshmen this season, and I think the rose to the occasion and did really well in our first competition format. Kathy was on fire tonight and really led the team.”
Tang won the vault, floor and all-around titles, posting a 10.000 in the opening rotation on vault. She shared the uneven bars title with the Black Squad's Sarah Faller, Shynelle Agaran and Amanda Bertorello as the quad each posted 9.950s.
Both teams started the meet on vault, where Dominiquea Trotter and Faller each posted 9.975s. The Black Squad pulled away with strong performances in the next two rotations, led by an impressive 9.975 on beam from freshman Macey Roberts, who tallied the highest score on the apparatus.
With the Black Team ahead, the Red Squad turned in a trio of impressive performances in the final rotation as the teams both finished on floor. Roberts again wowed the crowd, scoring a 9.950, but with Tang's 9.975 as the closing performance, the Red Team pulled ahead to win the scrimmage.
The Terps competed in front of a packed XFINITY Center Pavilion and were judged by fellow student-athletes.
Maryland opens the regular season in a quad meet at Pittsburgh, facing Eastern Michigan, Towson and the host Panthers on Jan. 10. The Terps host Penn State on Jan. 24 in the team's first home meet of the season. Maryland posted its highest NCAA finish if 14 years last season in the Terrapins' first season in the Big Ten. This season, the squad will face six teams that finished the 2014 season ranked by GymInfo.
