COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Senior Sarah Sprink of the Maryland field hockey team is one of four nominees for the Honda Sport Award for field hockey as announced by Chris Voelz, Executive Director of The Collegiate Women Sports Awards (CWSA) Monday.
The Honda Sport Award has been presented annually by the CWSA for the past 40 years to the top women athletes in 12 NCAA- sanctioned sports and signifies “the best of the best in collegiate athletics.” The winner of the sport award becomes a finalist for the Collegiate Woman Athlete of the Year and the prestigious 2016 Honda Cup which will be presented on a live telecast on June 27, 2016, in the Founders' Room at the Galen Center on the campus of the University of Southern California in downtown Los Angeles.
The nominees were chosen by a panel of coaches representing the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA). The Honda Sport Award winner for field hockey will be announced next week after voting by administrators from over 1,000 NCAA member schools. Each NCAA member institution has a vote.
Sprink, the Big Ten Player of the Year, served as a three-year captain for the Terrapins. As a leader of Maryland's defense, she helped them capture a school-record five straight shutouts in October. She tallied 10 goals with six assists on the season.
Sprink was named to the All-Big Ten First Team and the NFHCA All Mid-Atlantic Region First Team earlier this month. She was voted NFHCA Regional Player of the Year last week.
Duke's Lauren Blazing, Syracuse's Alyssa Manley and Connecticut's Roisin Upton are the other three nominees. Click here for the full release.
Five players in Maryland history have won the Honda Sport Award for field hockey seven times. Autumn Welsh was the first (2001), Paula Infante won twice (2005, 2006), then Susie Rowe won in 2008. Katie O'Donnell won in 2009 and 2010, then Megan Frazer won in 2011.
The Terrapins went 19-4 this season, sweeping the Big Ten regular season and tournament titles. They made the program's 21st straight NCAA Tournament appearance this season, marking the longest current active streak in the country.
