Glanville played nine seasons in the majors for the Philadelphia Phillies, Chicago Cubs and Texas Rangers. His best season came in 1999 when he batted .325 and placed second in the National League in hits (204). An accomplished defensive outfielder, Glanville reached double-digit outfield assists in three seasons and went 293 consecutive games without committing an error.
After retiring from Major League Baseball in 2005, Glanville has made his name as a writer and analyst, most notably with ESPN's Baseball Tonight, SportsCenter, and as part of the Wednesday Night Baseball broadcast team. He is a frequent contributor to the New York Times, and authors a whimsical blog on his website about parenting and fatherhood called The Daddy Games.
Glanville released the book, The Game From Where I Stand, in 2010. The book uses Glanville's experiences in the big leagues to capture the human side of the game. His writing speaks to all walks of life, and offers insight about baseball and how the sport translates to everyday life.
The Teaneck, N.J., native is also an accomplished public speaker addressing subjects such as self-empowerment, diversity and inclusion, drug policy, baseball culture, finding common ground, retirement and parenting. Glanville is a board member of the MLB Players Alumni Association, and is active in the community where, among other things, he is committed to raising the quality of public education through school equity and enhanced programming to support students of diverse backgrounds and educational needs. Glanville founded the Cecil E. Glanville Scholarship Fund in memory of his father to help qualified students attend college.
Maryland opens its 2016 campaign with a three-game series at Alabama starting on Feb. 19. The Terps advanced to their second straight Super Regional last season and finished with a school record 42 wins.
