COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Senior Sarah Sprink of the Big Ten champion Maryland field hockey program was voted NFHCA Regional Player of the Year by the nation's head coaches. She is one of five finalists for National Player of the Year.
Sprink, the Big Ten Player of the Year, served as a three-year captain for the Terrapins. As a leader of Terps' defense, she helped them capture a school-record five straight shutouts in October. She tallied 10 goals with six assists on the season.
Sprink was named to the All-Big Ten First Team and the NFHCA All Mid-Atlantic Region First Team earlier this month.
Connecticut's Roisin Upton (Mideast), Albany's Paula Heuser (Northeast), Virginia's Tara Vittese (South) and Michigan's Lauren Thomas (West) are the other four Regional Players of the Year and finalists for National Player of the Year.
Six Terrapins earned NFHCA All-Mid Atlantic Region honors earlier this week. Seniors Anna Dessoye, Welma Luus and Sprink, as well as freshman Linnea Gonzales, were named to the All-Region First Team. Sophomore Carrie Hanks and senior Alyssa Parker earned Second Team honors.
The Terrapins went 19-4 this season, sweeping the Big Ten regular season and tournament titles. They made the program's 21st straight NCAA Tournament appearance this season, marking the longest current active streak in the country.
