COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Big Ten Coach of the Year Missy Meharg of the Maryland field hockey program was voted 4U Field Hockey/NFHCA Mid-Atlantic Region Coach of the Year by her colleagues Wednesday for the 16th time in her 28-year career.
This is the second straight year Meharg was named both Regional and Big Ten Coach of the Year. She has been named NFHCA National Coach of the Year nine times and Conference Coach of the Year honors nine times as well.
Meharg led the Terrapins to a 19-4 record this season, sweeping the Big Ten regular season and tournament titles. They made the program's 21st straight NCAA Tournament appearance this season, marking the longest current active streak in the country.
Meharg also became the fourth coach in Division I history to reach the 500-win plateau in October. Her current record of 509-123-9 holds a winning percentage of 80.1 percent, which leads all active Division I coaches.
Four Terrapins earned NFHCA All-America honors Monday, as voted on by the nation's head coaches. Seniors Anna Dessoye and Sarah Sprink earned First Team honors, while freshman Linnea Gonzales and fifth-year senior Welma Luus earned Second Team honors.
This is the second straight First Team honor for Sprink, who was named to the Third Team in her sophomore season. Sprink was named Big Ten Player of the Year and the NFHCA All-Mid Atlantic Region Player of the year earlier this month.
This is the first All-America honor for Dessoye, Gonzales and Luus. Dessoye was named to the All-Mid Atlantic First Team for the second straight season last week.
Gonzales was named Big Ten Freshman of the Year and Luus led the Terrapins in scoring with 20 goals this season.
