Terps Take Field for Second Spring Practice

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Maryland football team held their second spring workout Saturday afternoon at Capital One Field at Byrd Stadium.

With projected starting quarterback Caleb Rowe sidelined for spring practice, Perry Hills and Shane Cockerille have gotten to split reps with the first team. After Saturday's workout Cockerille expressed his excitement on the opportunity he has this spring.

“It's really been a great experience,” Cockerille said. “I'm just excited for the opportunity that I've been put in. Going out there on the first team, coming from the scout team last year, the speed has been a lot different. Other than that, I'm just trying to bring what I've learned in the classroom out onto the field.”

The redshirt sophomore spent his first two seasons at Maryland in a reserve role learning from veterans C.J. Brown and Rowe. With another year in the system and additional reps, Cockerille is continuing his development at the quarterback position.

“I'm always working on my release,” Cockerille said. “I would say the biggest thing though is my feet. My feet tell me where I'm going to throw.”

Prior to arriving in College Park, Cockerille totaled 1,106 passing yards and seven touchdowns passes and amassed 1,305 rushing yards and 15 touchdowns during his senior campaign at Gilman.

Overall, Head Coach Randy Edsall is happy with how his team has performed at the start of spring practice.

“I was very pleased with the first day and I thought today there was a lot of energy and enthusiasm from guys on both sides of the ball,” Edsall said. “They were communicating and talking really well and when you have that, it kind of shows that they have confidence in what they're doing.”

The Terps will have another practice tomorrow as they work towards the annual Red-White Spring Game, which takes place at Capital One Field at Byrd Stadium on Saturday April 11 at 1:00 p.m.
