Baltimore, Md. - The Maryland track and field team put on a dominant showing at the Morgan State Legacy Meet, taking the women's team title and finishing second in the men's competition at Hughes Stadium this weekend.
Women's Competition
Junior Chioma Onyekwere won the discus with a mark or 166'01" and finished second in the women's hammer (162') to lead the Maryland women to a team victory.
Also in the throws, freshman Claudia Ababio finished third in the hammer throw (161'09") and second in the discus (144'4").
In the jumps, senior Amber Melville continued her spectacular season, placing second in the high jump with a mark of 6'00.50. The triple jump competition saw senior Thea LaFond notch a second-place finish with a leap of 42'11.75.
Charlotte Staver led the Terps in the middle distance events, notching a second-place showing in the 800m with a time of 2:13.52. Shade Pratt took fourth in the event while Maeve McCoy crossed the line in sixth.
In the distance events, Sydney Almeida just missed a victory at 5000m, placing second in 18:05.91. Alexandra Lucki won the 1500m in 4:31.75 with Myah Hicks just behind in 4:32.18.
Charde Barnes took fourth in the women's steeplechase.
In the sprints, Micha Powell ran 12.25 in the 100m dash finals and 24.88 in the 200m dash. Noella Anyangwe finished third in the 100m hurdles.
Taylor Tucker ran a personal best of 1:02.04 in the 400m hurdles to finish fourth.
Men's Competition
Derek Holland won the men's triple jump with a leap of 49'10", a season best, to lead the Terps to a second place overall finish.
In the throws, Pat Cole tossed 192'03 to capture the victory in the hammer throw.
Louis Corgliano won the 3000m steeplechase in a time of 9:33.66.
The 800m race saw Jacob Zivec (1.50.65) and Dan Trettel (1:50.84) go 2-3.
At 1500 meters, Kikanae Punyua placed second with a time of 4:01.07. Alex Leto ran 48.70 in the 400m event while Lionel Wilson notched a mark of 48.99.
Brandon Thompson continued his strong season with a 22.01 in the 200m race and a time of 10.82 in the 100m dash finals.
Terrence Maliff had a nice performance in the 400m hurdles that saw him finish fourth in 53.24. Paul Joseph place sixth in 53.62.
Diego Lyon notched a 14.79 in the 110m hurdles.
The team will travel to the Penn Relays next weekend in Philadelphia.
