INDIANAPOLIS - Juliet Vongphoumy won the Mary Fossum Award as the conference player with the lowest stroke average relative to par this season as Maryland finished in eighth place at the Big Ten Women's Golf Championship Sunday at Fort Golf Resort.
Vongphoumy fell one stroke shy of the individual championship, tying for second with a three-round score of 214 after posting a 73 on Sunday. The senior from Providence, R.I., recorded a tournament-low 68 in second-round play.
“I'm very proud of Juliet and her performance the whole season,” head coach Diana Cantu said. “She was very consistent all year and finished strong. Even though I coached her for only a year, she has made a big impact on my life and my development as a coach. It has been a huge honor helping her and watching her succeed on-and-off the course this year.”
Heidi Baek finished strong, posting back-to-back scores of 73 to finish with a 225 and tie for 29th. Jessica Gregory finished with a 231 to wrap up tied for 54th.
Brooke Kochevar improved in each round, capping the tournament with her best score of 76 for a 233 to tie for 60th
“Heidi came back after a tough first round which was exciting to watch,” Cantu said. “Brooke improved every round and Jessica played great her first two rounds, making a huge impact on our big move up the standings yesterday. Allie came on strong for us today as well.”
Alexandra Papell put together her finest round on Sunday with a 76 and three-day tally of 238 to finish tied for 70th. Panitta Yusabai tied for 79th with a three-round score of 244.
“I'm very proud of the progress we made this spring and we finished the season strong,” Cantu said. “The team gained confidence every competitive round and we kept learning and getting better.
“The first nine holes of the tournament took a toll on us but the team came back and played really well after that. We showed that we can compete in the Big Ten and that is very exciting.”
Northwestern and Ohio State tied for the team title with a team score of 863. NU's Sarah Cho won the individual crown with a three-round score of 213.
