COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The TERPS Leadership Academy hosted a communication, conflict management and effective leadership seminar last Tuesday in Heritage Hall.
Dr. Sue Sherburne, assistant athletics director for life skills & career development, hosted the seminar for 25 student-athletes at the University of Maryland. Sherburne's program discussed the importance of building relationships with other student-athletes and developing skills to become effective communicators.
“This forum gives us an opportunity to think about what it takes to become a good leader,” said junior women's lacrosse player Taylor Cummings. “It also provides us with an opportunity for self-reflection in a casual environment.”
The student-athletes then broke into five different groups to engage in discussion and group activities during the two-hour session.
Men's track & field athlete, Lionel Wilson, enjoyed the seminar and discovered a new perspective on effective leadership.
“This certainly opens up your mind,” Wilson said. “I think we all learned a great deal from this experience and how we can be better and more effective communicators.”
