COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Seven members of the Maryland field hockey team are competing in USA Field Hockey's High Performance event, the Young Women's National Championship, at the Spooky Nook Sports Complex in Lancaster, Pa., this week.
This year's tournament will once again serve as the selection event for the junior national team camp July 5-8, where the new Under-17, Under-19, and Under-21 squads are selected.
For those that are not age eligible for the Junior World Cup in 2016, it is an opportunity to be evaluated and considered for as a transitional national team member until they can join in residential training in Lancaster full time.
Sophomore Carrie Hanks will compete on Team Red and senior Anna Dessoye, redshirt junior Emma Rissinger and redshirt sophomore Brooke Adler will be on Team Blue. Senior Alyssa Parker is on Team Patriots, while redshirt sophomore Marissa Cutry and freshman Linnea Gonzales are on Team Freedom.
Dessoye, Parker and Gonzales are currently on the Under-21 Team. Hanks is on the Under-19 Team.
"Maryland is very proud of and excited to watch Anna, Alyssa, Emma, Brooke, Carrie, Marissa and Linnea over this week's tournament," head coach Missy Meharg said. "The women develop their hockey year-round in a variety of competitive ways, with USA Hockey's Young Women's National Championship being a highlight."
Competition will begin Tuesday morning and will run through Friday. For the full event schedule and more info, click here.
“This is a great oppourtunity for Anna, Alyssa and Emma to be seen and potentially selected to become transitional national team players," associate head coach and former Olympian Dina Rizzo said. "For the younger Terps, there is a possibility to be named to participate in Junior National Team Camp in July. What an honor it is for the girls to compete in a USA Field Hockey competitive environment. There will be strong competition all week and we wish them good luck.”
