COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Surrounded by hundreds of supporters, the Maryland volleyball team kicked off the 2015 season with the annual Red-White Scrimmage at the XFINITY Center Pavilion Saturday evening.
“We're excited to have scrimmage No. 1 under our belts,” head coach Steve Aird said. “It was a pretty fun night across the board. It was the first time in action for our four new Terps, and I thought they did a great job. The team is better, and we're excited to keep improving.”
Fans met with the coaching staff and 2015 roster over drinks and appetizers in Heritage Hall before the scrimmage. Assistant coaches Adam Hughes and Kristin Kenney and director of operations Stephen Yates return to the Terps for their second years while volunteer assistant coach Kevin Cardoza joined the staff in the offseason.
The Terps began the match with Hailey Murray, Emily Fraik, Abby Bentz, Kelsey Wicinski, Amy Dion, Angel Gaskin and Whitney Craigo representing the Red team while Kelsey Hrebenach, Samantha Higginbothem, Carlotta Oggioni, Liz Twilley, Adreené Elliott and Ashlyn MacGregor played for the White team. Red took a 25-21 first set victory before winning a 25-15 second set with a retooled lineup.
The White team came back to take a 25-16 third set win. The Terps played one final set to 15, with the White team taking a 16-14 victory.
The Terps start the 2015 season with the Maryland Invite next weekend. Maryland will host Duquesne, Morgan State, Kent State and Hofstra in the two-day tournament. For the full 2015 schedule, click here.
