Big Ten Player to Watch Sarah Sprink scored the Terrapins' first goal about three minutes in off their first corner, set up by Delaney Leathers and fellow Big Ten Player to Watch Anna Dessoye.
With about 15 minutes left in the first half, Welma Luus banged in a hard backhanded shot from the left side to make it a two-goal lead. Nine minutes later, Dessoye knocked in a pass from Faye Curran to make it 3-0 at the break.
Lein Holsboer made it a four-goal lead seven minutes into the second half when she knocked in a goal off a rebound on a penalty corner.
Freshman Linnea Gonzales, who was also named to the Big Ten Players to Watch List this week, scored twice in the second half. First, she off a rebounded shot on a penalty corner to make it 5-0 with 18 minutes to go, then struck again off a rebound of her own shot for the Terrapins' sixth goal with 10:20 to play.
The Terrapins outshot the Dukes, 27-9 and had 11 penalty corners to three. Eight of James Madison's nine shots came in the second half and freshman goalkeeper Sarah Holliday saved five of them.
Coming off of its inaugural Big Ten championship, Maryland will officially open the 2015 season Friday with a 3 p.m. game at Temple in the Conference Cup. The Terrapins will welcome Saint Joseph's to the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex for their home opener Sunday at 2 p.m. Prior to the Terps' game, Temple will play Towson at the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex in the first game of the day. Admission and parking are both free.
DEFLECTIONS
Missy Meharg on more positives of Sunday's game - “We saw a lot of depth and a lot of players that have really trained hard for the spring season and the last three months. As a fall sport coach, that's what you hope for – that they just come in in a really fit place. I'm very proud of the women because they're very fit and they can play the brand of hockey that is fun for people to watch and is fun to play.”
Eighteen Terrapins saw action in Sunday's exhibition. Five Terps made their on-field debuts including Faye Curran, freshmen Julie Duncan, Olivia Reiter, Holliday, Gonzales and redshirt freshman Layne Litsinger.
