Box Score COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The Maryland field hockey team dominated Saint Joseph's 6-2, Sunday afternoon in the Terrapins' home opener at the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex. Newcomers Faye Curran and Linnea Gonzales led the Terrapins (2-0) with two goals apiece in the win.
The Terrapins owned both ends of the field, outshooting the Hawks (1-1), 30-4.
Curran scored her first goal as a Terrapin to put Maryland on the board, just 3:27 into the match. Senior Anna Dessoye and junior Delaney Leathers notched assists on the play.
Just under 15 minutes later, Gonzales, a rookie, banged in a score off of Lein Holsboer's saved shot to make it 2-0 at 18:13.
With less than five minutes remaining in the half, senior Alyssa Parker buried a shot from the near post off of a penalty corner.
Just under two minutes later, Curran scored once more off a penalty corner, this time set up by Leathers and Holsboer. The Terrapins led Saint Joseph's (1-1), 4-0, at the break.
Ten minutes into the second half, Dessoye made a quick move behind the Hawks' goalkeeper to score the Terrapins' fifth goal. The score put her over the 100 career-point mark.
The Hawks' Ann Willocks put them on the board in the 57th minute as she took a diving shot from the top left side of the circle.
Gonzales added her second score of the day off a penalty corner in the 73rd minute to make it 6-2. Leathers picked up her third assist of the game on the play and Dessoye added her fourth point.
Saint Joseph's was awarded a penalty corner with just under a minute to play. The Hawks scored with 15 seconds remaining to finalize the score at 6-2.
Maryland had 12 penalty corners to two.
Next, the Terrapins will travel to Lancaster, Pa. Sept. 4-6 for the Big Ten/ACC Cup at the Spooky Nook Sports Complex, the home of USA Field Hockey. The Terrapins will take on No. 13 Boston College at 4 p.m. Friday and No. 10 Northwestern will play No. 5 Duke at 7 p.m. The Terps will play the Blue Devils Sunday at 3 p.m. after the Wildcats-Eagles matchup at noon.
Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for students with an ID or children 14 and under. There is a two-game deal available, which is $15 for adults and $8 for students.
The Terrapins will be hosting a clinic on Sept. 5 at the Spooky Nook Sports Complex from 12-2 p.m. Admission is $25 per athlete.
