ROSEMONT, Ill. – Senior Anna Dessoye and freshman Linnea Gonzales of the third-ranked Maryland field hockey team earned the first Big Ten weekly honors of the season Tuesday.
Dessoye was named Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week and Gonzales was named Freshman of the Week. Dessoye and Gonzales are Nos. 1 and 2 in the conference in points and Gonzales leads the league in scoring.
This is the second career weekly honor for Dessoye, who was named Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week last Oct. 14. She helped the Terrapins get off to a 2-0 start to the season by leading the offense in its first two games. Dessoye scored twice and added two assists for a total of six points on the weekend. She scored her 100th career point in Sunday's game.
Gonzales wasted no time in helping the Terrapins' offense, as she scored Maryland's first goal of the season at Temple. She drove it into the circle herself and scored 12 minutes into the match. Gonzales finished the weekend with four goals.
The Terrapins are ranked No. 3 in the NFHCA Preseason poll, which was released last Tuesday. The Terrapins have started the year in the top three in each of the last 17 years, since 1999.
Next, the Terrapins will travel to Lancaster, Pa. Sept. 4-6 for the Big Ten/ACC Cup at the Spooky Nook Sports Complex, the home of USA Field Hockey. The Terrapins will take on No. 13 Boston College at 4 p.m. Friday and No. 10 Northwestern will play No. 5 Duke at 7 p.m. The Terps will play the Blue Devils Sunday at 3 p.m. after the Wildcats-Eagles matchup at noon.
Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for students with an ID or children 14 and under. There is a two-game deal available, which is $15 for adults and $8 for students.
The Terrapins will be hosting a clinic on Sept. 5 at the Spooky Nook Sports Complex from 12-2 p.m. Admission is $25 per athlete.
