COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The Maryland women's soccer team outshot and out possessed James Madison, but fell 1-0 in overtime to the Dukes at Ludwig Field Thursday night.
The Terrapins (4-3-0) held the advantage in shots (14-11) and corner kicks (13-0) but were unable to find the deciding tally. Ashley Herndon won the game for James Madison with a goal in the 94th minute.
“I felt like we played some really good soccer today and that we deserved better, but you have to put away your opportunities,” head coach Jonathan Morgan said. “We had more than enough opportunities to put this game away in the first half and if you get those opportunities you have to take advantage of them.”
Maryland first opportunity came in the eighth minute when junior Natasha Ntone-Kouo slid a dangerous cross from the byline that just missed the feet of Gabby Galanti. Galanti then flashed a shot wide in the 14th minute.
Sophomore Alex Anthony saw her shot in the 26th minute blocked before senior Sarah Molina notched the best chance in the half in the 33rd minute. Senior Riley Barger hit one of Maryland's nine first half corners onto Molina's head, but the shot was knocked over the crossbar.
The Terps outshot the Dukes 6-2 in the first half and held a 9-0 corner advantage.
In the second half, Maryland once again found most of the dangerous chances. Anthony found the first good chance of the half when she slid her shot inside the box wide. Off the ensuing corner, Ntone-Kouo saw her volley blocked before the ball found Barger, who's bending right-footed effort was palmed away by Ellen Forrest.
In the 57th minute, Galanti tried to chip the keeper to the far post from the right side of the field, but the shot went wide. Ntone-Kouo then found herself free on the left, but sprayed her right-footed effort wide.
Maryland best chance came in the 73rd minute. Ntone Kouo fired a cross from the right side that Maise McCune headed wide from point blank range. Allie Brunner then almost won the game for the Dukes in the 87th minute when her looping shot hit the crossbar.
Herndon found the winner three minutes into overtime. Rachel Ivey slipped a through ball into the right side of the box, which Herndon finished with the outside of her foot.
Sophomore Rachel Egyed started in goal for the Terps and recorded four saves in her first taste of collegiate action.
Maryland returns to action Sunday against Yale. Kickoff from Ludwig Field is scheduled for 1 p.m., and the game will be streamed live on BTN Plus.
