COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Maryland women's golf team looks to build on its promising start as a member of the Big Ten Conference when it opens the 2015-16 campaign at the Cougar Classic on Sunday.
The Terps finished strong in 2015 under then-first year head coach Diana Cantu. Maryland returns several key veterans, including Big Ten Players to Watch Heidi Baek and Panitta Yusabai in addition to welcoming a stellar incoming class.
Baek, a senior from Suffolk, England, improved her average over five strokes from the fall season to the spring in 2014-15. She racked up three top-20 performances on the year, including tying for 12th at Briar's Creek.
Yusabai, a junior from Pattata, Thailand, is looking for a breakout season in College Park after competing in nine events for the Terps as a sophomore in 2014-15.
Highlighting the newcomers is Ludovica Farina, who was also named a Big Ten Player to Watch in her first season in College Park. Farina, a freshman from Siracusa, Italy, is one of two newcomers for the Terps this season. She was a quarterfinalist at the Girls' British Open Amateur Championship and took second and fifth, respectively, at the International Junior Open of Belgium and European Ladies Team Amateur Championship in 2014. She is joined by fellow Italian and classmate Ludovica Scandroglio.
Maryland will need to replace one of its finest golfers in program history with the exit of First Team All-Big Ten performer Juliet Vongphoumy. In addition to Baek and Yusabai, Jessica Gregory, Alexandra Papell, Kavita Sehmi, and Brooke Kochevar will look to fill the void left by Vongphoumy, who finished tied for second in the Big Ten a year ago.
The Terps travel to Charleston for the Cougar Classic beginning Sunday. For a full breakdown of the Terps' 2015-16 schedule, click here.
In addition to the host College of Charleston, other teams participating include Arkansas, Auburn, Central Florida, Clemson, Florida, Furman, Georgia, Indiana, Michigan Mississippi State, North Carolina, NC State, UNC Greensboro, Penn State, Virginia Wake Forest, Wisconsin and Charleston Southern.
Tee time is scheduled for 8 a.m. Sunday for the first group at Yeamans Halls Club in Hanahan, S.C. Yeamans is a Par 72, 6,204-yard course.
