WASHINGTON, D.C. – The No. 11 Maryland men's soccer team saw its three-game unbeaten streak snapped at No. 25 Georgetown, 2-1, Wednesday afternoon.
Maryland (3-2-3, 0-0-2 B1G) picked up its lone goal from freshman Sebastian Elney.
Georgetown got on the board first with a tally from Alex Muyl in the 53rd minute. Ivan Magalhaes slipped and fell on a defensive play, allowing an open path to the goal for Muyl, who finished past Cody Niedermeier to the far post from ten yards. It was the first goal allowed for Maryland in three and a half matches.
The Terps answered in the 69th minute when Elney picked up his team-leading fourth goal of the year. Eryk Williamson centered the ball, dished to Elney, who beat Georgetown keeper for the open-net, short-range goal.
Georgetown tacked on the game-winner after a failed clear by the Terrapin defense. Arun Basuljevic finished from close range with an assist from Muyl in the 83rd minute.
“It is a very empty feeling because we deserved better. We played very well,” head coach Sasho Cirovski said. “I thought we were on the wrong end of a couple unfortunate turnovers that we got punished for. Georgetown is one of the top teams in the country and is a very veteran team. I loved how our team played today. I thought our effort was outstanding.”
Maryland travels to Wisconsin on Sunday for a match on the Big Ten Network.
