BRIDGEVIEW, Ill. – Addie Steiner scored two goals to lead Northwestern past the Maryland women's soccer team, 2-0, at Toyota Park Thursday night.
The Terrapins (5-5-0, 0-2-0 Big Ten) were unable to tally despite a late second half surge that saw them notch four shots in the last 20 minutes. Steiner scored a goal in both halves to give the Wildcats the win.
“I'm disappointed in our performance tonight,” head coach Jonathan Morgan said. “We have to represent the jersey better than that. Obviously it starts with me. I'll have to do a better job preparing the group.”
Northwestern scored on its second shot of the game. A lifted through ball came off the head of senior Kayla Shea and into the path of Steiner, who chipped the ball over senior Rachelle Beanlands to put the Wildcats up 1-0 after 16 minutes.
Sophomore Alex Anthony produced Maryland's best chance of the half. The sophomore hit the crossbar in the 39th minute.
After Steiner put Northwestern up 2-0 in the 65th minute, Maryland together its best spell of the game. Anthony produced a save from Wildcat keeper Lauren Clem before Madison Turner hit the crossbar in the 72nd minute. Off Turner's effort, Lisa Bianchini forced a save from Clem.
A couple of corner kicks from Shannon Collins in the 75th minute were wasted. Turner notched Maryland's final shot of the contest in the 89th minute, but Clem parried it away.
Beanlands nabbed two saves in her 67th career start, which breaks the Maryland all-time record for starts by a goalkeeper.
Maryland returns to action at Illinois on Sunday. Action is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m., from the Illinois Soccer Stadium and will be streamed on BTN Plus.
