Box Score

COLLEGE PARK, Md.  –  Fifth-year senior Welma Luus led the ninth-ranked Maryland field hockey team (7-3, 2-0 Big Ten) to a 2-1 win over No. 18 Michigan Friday afternoon at the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex. Luus scored both of the Terrapin's goals and added a defensive save late in the second half to preserve Maryland's fifth straight victory.

“Love the outcome,” head coach Missy Meharg said. “Michigan is a great team and is very well-coached, very strong. I'm very proud of our women. That's a great team and another great conference win.”

The Wolverines (6-3, 1-1) scored the first goal of the game when Sina Lampe deflected in a long hit from the outside of the circle from Veerle Lubbers in the 20th minute.

Just about seven minutes later, fifth-year senior Welma Luus tied the game for Maryland. She deflected in a shot by senior Sarah Sprink off a penalty corner with just under nine minutes left in the first half.

Three minutes into the second half, redshirt junior Emma Rissinger sent a pass in to Luus, who got behind the Michigan goalkeeper to score the gamewinner.

With just over 12 minutes left in the game and the Terrapins down a player due to a green card, Luus made her first career defensive save on a shot off a penalty corner to help preserve the one-goal win.

Maryland outshot Michigan, 13 to 12 and had nine penalty corners to four. Freshman goalkeeper Sarah Holliday made a career-high six saves in the match.

Meharg is in her 28th season as head coach of the Terrapins. She's led them to a record of 497-122-9 (.799), seven NCAA titles, 20 conference titles and 16 Final Fours. With three more wins, Meharg will be just the fourth Division I head coach to reach the 500-win mark.

Senior Anna Dessoye was named Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week for the second time this year and third time in her career Tuesday. Linnea Gonzales was voted Big Ten Freshman of the Week for the second time.
