COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Fifth-year senior Welma Luus of the eighth-ranked Maryland field hockey team was named Co-Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week Tuesday, after she scored three goals in the Terrapins' two conference wins over the weekend.
Luus scored the game-winning goals vs. No. 18 Michigan and Michigan State to help Maryland (8-3, 3-0 Big Ten) to its sixth straight win. This is the first weekly honor of her career.
Luus knocked in both of Maryland's goals in a 2-1 win over No. 18 Michigan Friday. She scored the tying goal just before halftime with a deflection off a penalty corner. Three minutes into the second period, Luus scored the game-winning goal with a hard shot behind the back of the Michigan keeper. Later in the game, she made her first career defensive save to help preserve the win.
In Sunday's 5-1 win over Michigan State, Luus picked up where she left off from Friday, scoring just a minute and 25 seconds into the match.
This is the fifth weekly honor of the season for Maryland. Anna Dessoye has been named Offensive Player of the Week twice and Linnea Gonzales has earned the Freshman of the Week honor twice.
Head coach Missy Meharg is in her 28th season as head coach of the Terrapins. She's led them to a record of 498-122-9 (.799), seven NCAA titles, 20 conference titles and 16 Final Fours. With two more wins, Meharg will be just the fourth Division I head coach to reach the 500-win mark.
Next, the Terrapins will open a three-week road swing with a trip to Ohio State (6-3, 2-0) Friday at 3:30 p.m. The Terps-Buckeyes game will be streamed live online with a subscription through Buckeye Vision.
Live Stats will be available and updates will also be posted to the Maryland Field Hockey Twitter feed.
