
Terps Cohost DC Classic This Weekend

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Maryland volleyball team continues nonconference play cohosting the DC Classic with Howard this weekend.
• The Terps take on Penn and Howard in Washington, D.C. Saturday before returning to College Park Sunday to host Western Carolina and George Mason.
• Maryland opened the season by winning the Maryland Invite with four wins over Morgan State, Duquesne, Hofstra and Kent State last weekend.
• Live stats will be available for each match, and updates will be given on the Maryland volleyball Twitter feed.

• Season tickets for Maryland volleyball matches are available online by clicking here. Tickets for nine women's and 12 men's matches are just $40 for adults and $25 for youth (3-17) or seniors (62+).

terps win maryland invite
• Maryland started the season 4-0 and won the Maryland Invite last weekend.
• Outside hitter Adreené Elliott and middle blocker Hailey Murray were named to the all-tournament team while Elliott earned MVP honors. Elliott led the Terps with 36 kills on .281 hitting in four matches while also combining on 13 blocks. Murray posted 23 kills and 14 blocks.
• The Terps opened the season with three straight-set wins (Morgan State, Duquesne, Hofstra) for the first time since 1997.
Scouting the howard bison
• The Bison are still looking for their first win in 2015. The team started the season 0-3 in the District of Columbia Volleyball Challenge before falling to Loyola Tuesday.
• Morgan State's Khaila Donaldson leads the team with 50 kills (3.33 k/s). Janaya Hampton has 12 blocks through four matches while Tamia Dockery leads the team with 63 assists.
• The Terps are 14-0 all-time versus the Bison. The teams last competed against each other in 2009.
Scouting the george mason patriots
• The Patriots began the season 2-1 with wins over Georgetown and Howard in the DC Volleyball Challenge.
• Through three matches, Morghan Martin is leading the team with 33 kills (3.30 k/s). Caitlyn Hipsher leads the team in setting, averaging 9.90 assists per set. Lola Owokoniran has posted 13 blocks, including two solo, through three matches
• The Terps are 23-6 all-time vs. the Quakers. Maryland defeated George Mason in five sets last season.
Scouting the penn quakers
• Penn opens its 2015 season against the Terps on Saturday. The Quakers posted an 8-17 record in 2014.
• The Quakers are led by five senior captains. Outside hitter Alexis Genske earned All-Ivy League honorable mention in 2014 while rightside hitterAlex Caldwell was named to the All-Ivy League second team.
• Maryland is 4-6 all-time against Penn, with the last meeting coming at the Maryland Invite in 2013.
Scouting the western carolina catamounts
• The Catamounts enter this weekend with a 2-2 record. After going 1-2 in the Catamount Volleyball Classic last weekend, the team swept UNC Ashville Tuesday, led by setter Jo-Leigh Vervelde's triple-double (15 kills, 21 assists, 11 digs).
• Vervelde leads the team in kills (45) and service aces (4) and is second on the team in assists (59). Three Catamounts, including Vervelde, have posted double-digit blocks through four matches.
• The Terps face Western Carolina for the first time in program history Sunday.
freshmen impress in first weekend
• All four members of the 2015 signing class contributed to Maryland's four wins in the first weekend.
• Outside hitter Liz Twilley was immediately slotted into the starting lineup and posted 34 kills in four matches. Opposite hitter Angel Gaskin continued to improve with each match, culminating in 12 kills on .321 hitting against Kent State.
• Abby Bentz quickly entered the setting rotation, posting 21 assists and three service aces versus Kent State. Defensive specialist Kelsey Wicinski was key in the backrow, notching 28 digs in four matches.
second season under steve aird
• The Terps continue their journey in the Big Ten under second-year head coach Steve Aird.
• A two-time NCAA champion with Penn State, Aird led Maryland to a 6-0 start in his first season, the program's best since 2005.
• Aird and his staff were instrumental in increasing community support for the Terps as the team set four attendance records in 2014.
Terps' BTN Schedule Released
• Maryland will have at least 15 of its conference matches featured on Big Ten Network platforms in 2015.
• The Terps open the conference slate on the Big Ten Network as Maryland hosts Illinois on Sept. 25 at 7 p.m.
• Maryland will be featured on BTN Plus, the network's subscription-based platform, in 14 conference appearances.
dion, fraik named team captains
• Seniors Amy Dion and Emily Fraik were announced as the 2015 team captains.
• A three-year starter at libero, Dion led the team in digs in 2014. She serves as the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee president.
• An important contributor since her freshman season at outside hitter, Fraik was second on the team in kills last season. Off the court, she holds a 4.0 GPA as a chemical and biomolecular engineering major.
murray competes with big ten's best
• Sophomore middle blocker Hailey Murray traveled to Slovenia, Croatia and Italy as a member of the first-ever Big Ten Foreign Tour team in June.
• Alongside student-athletes from the other 13 conference programs, Murray played seven matches overseason, including five against national teams.
• Murray will be an important contributor to the Terps in 2015 as she led the team in blocks last season as just a freshman.
elliott returns to the terps
• Redshirt senior Adreené Elliott returns to Maryland after the outside hitter suffered a season-ending injury just seven matches into the 2014 season.
• Elliott was named All-ACC Third Team in 20143 and ACC All-Freshman team in 2011.
• In the summer of 2014, Elliott was selected to participate in the U.S. Collegiate National Team program in Minneapolis. The Winston Salem, N.C., native is just eight kills away from reaching 1,000 for her career.
tough road ahead
• In their second season in the Big Ten, the Terps once again have a challenging slate.
• Maryland will play 16 matches against 12 teams that were ranked or received votes in the preseason AVCA Coaches Poll.
• Nine of the Terrapins' conference foes eaerned spots in the poll, including No. 1 Penn State, T-No. 5 Nebraska and Wisconsin and No. 8 Illinois.
aird announces 2015 signing class
• Head coach Steve Aird welcomed four freshman for the 2015 season.
• The 2015 signing class features setter Abby Bentz, opposite hitter Angel Gaskin, outside hitter Liz Twilley and defensive specialist/libero Kelsey Wicinski.
• Bentz was named a 2015 PrepVolleyball Academic All-American while Twilley was the 2014 Maryland Gatorade Player of the Year. Wicinski was a three-time defensive player of the year selection and Gaskin was an all-conference performer.
